Child care tips: Healthy food for brain development in Huntersville, NC

Posted on 07-27-2014 | Drew Nealeans

Child brain development is a big job, and requires the right nutrition to be handled properly. A child needs to have three full meals a day to get adequate nutrition for their body and brain. At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Lake Norman, we take our brain development program very seriously and utilize our scientifically developed Brain Waves curriculum to maximize each child’s learning potential. Here we have compiled a list of healthy food parents can prepare to enhance brain development in their children.

Children need to eat vegetables, as they are a large source of “brain food”. Broccoli is high in vitamin K and helps with cognitive functions in the brain. This tasty vegetable also helps with physical growth, which means your child will receive a double benefit from this green veggie!

Purple cauliflower

This vegetable is low in sugar and high in fiber, and it also contains folate and B6. All these nutrients are good for:

  • Memory
  • Mood regulation
  • Improved attention to detail

You can make a puree of the cauliflower and serve it like mashed potatoes, or serve it chopped with a dipping sauce. Be careful when serving chopped pieces to very small children to avoid choking.

Greek yogurt

Yogurt contains healthy fats, which are important for brain health. Greek yogurt is also high in protein, which helps keep cell membranes flexible. These ingredients make Greek Yogurt a healthier alternative to traditional yogurt. It can be served on cereal, salads or alone as a light snack at day care or at home.

Child brain development is important during the first five years of a child’s life. Parents should make it a priority to stimulate their child’s brain everyday, and also provide the right nutrition to support brain development.
