Helping Your Child Make New Friends

Posted on 07-16-2014 | Kids 'R' Kids of Lake Norman

Preschool children should feel a sense of community and have good friends to enjoy. Some children are born with a natural ability in social settings that is evident at an early age. They have no problem making friends, they get invited to more parties than you can attend, and they are able to communicate effortlessly. They are like friend magnets, always attracting new friends and children to play with. Other children may need help developing their social skills and encouragement for feeling comfortable in new settings.

How to help a child who has difficulty making friends:

  • Encourage new friendships and talk to teachers and staff. If your child attends a childcare, daycare or preschool, discuss your concerns with his teachers and ask for assistance. Make sure the facility’s programs are designed in a manner that encourages new friendships among children. The staff should be qualified to recognize children who need help making friends and give them the assistance needed.
  • Community involvement. Look for programs and activities in your community where your child can get involved. Seek activities that interest your child. As the parent, begin building relationships with the other parents involved, as well. Making friends is a lot easier when the parents are friends.
  • Invite friends into their comfort zone. Encourage your child to invite friends over to your home to play. Make sure you keep games and activities available. Having good snacks on hand, never hurts either!
  • Role play with your child. Have pretend conversations with your child, acting as if you are another child who is playing alone near your child. Help him learn how to ask another child, “Do you want to play?” Then role play responses to questions from other children. For example, if another child asks, “What are you doing?” Your child’s response might be, “I’m making an airplane, would you like to help me?”

At Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Lake Norman, our programs for infants, toddlers, and preschool children are designed to maximize friendly interactions between each child and teachers, no matter the nationality, religious belief, or cultural differences. If you are in the area, we’d love to have you stop by for a tour!
