How to Get Kids Ready to Go Back to School

Posted on 08-07-2014 | Kids R Kids Learning Academy of Lake Norman

Transitioning from the end of summer to the start of school is never easy. In fact, the mere mention of school’s return initially produces more groans than grins, which is common. Even for parents! Oft times, the new school schedule means more early morning activity and carpool coordination, but once the transition is over, everyone finds their niche and enjoys the new routine. Make the transition less intimidating by trying these 5 simple steps for getting your kids ready to go back to school!

1. Discuss the Benefits. Start the conversation now. Acknowledge that the return to school may be hard at first but it will be fun to see old friends, meet new friends, and learn new things. Discussing the benefits of school with your child may help the transition be more enjoyable.

2. Read, Set... Wake Up! No more sleeping in! Waiting until school is back in session to set the alarm clocks to go off before the sun shines most likely won't yield great results. Go ahead and set the alarm clocks now for a reasonable hour and help them start to adjust to their upcoming new wake up time.

3. Walk the Campus. If your child is feeling hesitant to return to school, even before orientation, take a "field trip" to their school and walk around. Remind your child where the cafeteria is, where recess takes place, where he will be picked up and dropped off. Familiarize your child with the are again, giving him time to get reacquainted and less intimidated.

4. Find Some New Gear! Often finding the right back-to-school gear can make a big difference. Help your child find a backpack that he/she loves or a new pair of shoes, perhaps a lunch box that will bring a smile to her face. You don't have to break the bank to find some new gear to help the transition for your child.

5. Craft Time! Make a Countdown Banner. Pull our some scissors, crayons, glue and construction paper to make a countdown-to-school banner! Write the numbers of the days left on separate pieces of paper that can be removed daily until school starts. Using bright and cheery colors will bring a feeling of eager anticipation!

Help your child get excited about their return to school. As parents, be sure you exude the same enthusiasm! HINT: If you've grown to love the summer schedule just as much as the kids, you may have to ACT like going back to school is fun, too! Enjoy these last days of summer!
