Lake Norman Child Care: Infant cognitive development

Posted on 10-14-2014

When your child is born, he or she will not only grow physically but will also develop mentally at an amazingly rapid pace. The development of the brain, how information is processed, and the ability to think and understand are all part of a child’s cognitive development. Our infant child care program at Kids ‘R’ Kids Learning Academy of Lake Norman is designed with the parent and child in mind. The components of our infant child care curriculum include: cognitive, language, physical, social and emotional development. Our teaching method expands your childs brain, and encourages him or her to enjoy learning and playing with peers. We have listed information below about cognitive development in your infant:

Understanding cognitive development

Your child is born knowing how to do things such as sleep, eat and breathe. There are parts of the brain that need additional stimulation in order to develop and function well. As your childs grows the ability to remember improves. At two months a child is less likely to remember much, but at six months this changes.

When your child is born his or her brain is not fully able to to cope with thought, memory and perception. This process, where your child learns and begins to understand all these things, is called cognitive development.

Boosting cognitive development

Your child’s cognitive development will happen naturally. However, you can play a big role in boosting it. There are many ways of doing this, and they include:

  • Reading to your child (language development)
  • Simple exercises (physical development)
  • A healthy diet
  • Age-appropriate toys

Your child learns by doing things over and over again, so be sure to allow practice and repetition to improve the learning process.

Should you be worried about your child’s development, please consult your family doctor for further clarification.
